For nine months, give or take, your body changed. A lot. And then came birth - vaginally or cesarean - and your body changed even more. Some of those changes may have reversed themselves and some just kinda stayed there, making it annoying and frustrating to try on clothes, the do certain movements or just to look in the mirror.
A lot of moms come to me with one mission in mind: Lose the weight and tone the body, ASAP. The problem is, that when going too hard too soon - you might end up hurting yourself. And I get it, I really do. I know how hard it is when you look in the mirror and it feel like you're seeing a different person looking back at you. I myself had to deal with horrible pregnancy symptoms that I didn't even know existed until I had them myself (Varicosities, anyone? Ugh), and I know the challenges that comes with those changes. All I wanted, after giving birth (and also before, to be honest), is to feel like my body is mine again. I wanted to feel sexy again, but having a child sucking out of my boob or having my cellulite doubling its size didn't give a feeling of confidence. The opposite. So trust me when i'm saying: I get it. But there's only one way to achieve those goals, and that is: One Step At A Time. Any other way simply won't work.
If you start going hard and engage in high intensity activity too soon, without any preparation, you might experience signs related to overdoing, which won't benefit you at all, on the contrary. Here are the signs that I want you to pay attention to, as theses might be signs of overdoing*: 1. Fatigues, mild depression or lack of motivation 2. Decrease in strength, even though you're training 3. Decrease in milk supply, difficulty sleeping
So what CAN you do? Like I said: One step at a time, that's the only way. Start slow. Join a gentle core class, engage in a basic body conditioning program with a professional that knows the female body and knows what is right for postpartum women. Perhaps take a dance class that will help you reconnect and feel sexy again. Find an outdoor walking group that can help you get active without tearing your body apart.
When taking it easy, and starting slow, you will for sure succeed. And even if some of the changes in your body are here to stay, I promise that your feelings towards them will get positive, as you'll feel more like you by taking care of your body in a healthy, respectful way. Feeling sexy comes from feeling confident in your own skin, not from having the smallest circumference or the perfect boobs.
